A Medieval Estate in the Dordogne

In the middle of the tranquil valleys of the Périgord Vert, near to the village La Coquille, you will find the Chateau de Mavaleix, which was built in the thirteenth century. The estate, which covers 170 acres, will entrance you with its woods, gardens, small lakes, meadows, parks and rivers. This centuries old castle, is the ideal location for families and friends to sample the flavour and the quality of life of rural France.

As soon as you enter the estate through the main gates, you are transported in time to a medieval world of knights and lords, full of adventures and romance. When you begin to explore the estate, you will find a luxuriant park with hundred-year-old trees, the large castle vegetable garden, an orchard, the swimming pool and a tennis court.

After a brief look round, it's time for a welcoming aperitif on the terrace or in the bar. After a while, you will want to see your room and discover its charming layout and comfort.

History

Historically, the Chateau de Mavaleix was a fortress, which was constructed to protect the forges that spread along the small river 'La Velouze ', against invasion from nearby foes. These forges were vital because they produced the weapons, the tools and the locks for the local nobles.

The castle was also the home of some of the master smiths whose skills earned them the rank of nobility. One of the most famous inhabitants was Nicolas-Emile Grenouillet of Mavaleix. This master smith prospered here and for several years was the mayor of the township of Chalais. His imposing tomb, dating of the end of the 19th century, is hidden in the woods of the castle. You can visit this monument but the noble's actual remains were transferred to the cemetery in Chalais where there is a copy of his tomb.
